Unlike their larger comrades – the duvet, comforter and sleeping blanket – the blankets are designed to wrap around your body like a cozy burrito, cling to your shoulders like a superhero, adorn a sofa or add to duvets for an extra layer of warmth.
Blankets are also practical: they provide a protective barrier on sofas against the loss of pets and prevent soggy bottoms during picnics. In fact, I have a blanket on me right now as I write this story.
However, not all throws are made the same. Here’s what you need to know before buying your next throw, plus recommendations in case you’re: lazy, crippled by too many choices, or looking for a good gift.
Throw Blankets 101
Check the size
Throws are usually 60 x 70 inches. If you are looking for more comfortable real estate or if you are tall, you may want to go for a larger blanket.
Pay attention to the washing instructions
Throws and blankets are, in my experience of not paying attention to wash labels, the rare exception to my lazy philosophy. Not following the washing instructions can result in a crispy, deflated blanket. I tend to use the light detergent and wash out the fabric softener while following the directions.
Note the Fuzz Factor
Read reviews to see if the throw has a tendency to come loose, which equates to more lingering lint in your home and on you. No one wants to be distracted by a rogue plushie.
Know the intended function of the throw
Is it a throw for decoration? For comfort? Knowing the use of throwing can help you determine what type of throwing to get. You can get away with something thinner for decoration, but you might want to go for something thicker if you’re using the throw to watch Hours of Ozark.
Find the mobile
GSM, or grams per square meter, indicates the thickness of the throw. The higher the GSM, the thicker the coverage. This is important if you’re generally on the warm side, temperature-wise: a blanket that’s too thick can cause you to sweat. But if you are cold, a blanket that is too thin will make you shiver.

Chanasya Super Soft Fluffy Faux Fur Throw
This throw is a divine level blanket. You can take it from me: I own it. Faux fur and sherpa are soft and luxurious, and they look more expensive than they are. An Amazon reviewer said this throw is equivalent to “sleeping in the pellets of 50 bunnies, but [without] the guilt of all those bunny lives. However, pay close attention to washing instructions and steer clear of fabric softener, heavy detergents, and high heat, which can cause faux fur and sherpa to clump together, ruining the effectiveness of the plushies.
- Soft, tender; no shedding, perfect for Jon Snow cosplay
- Requires special care when washing
Best Insanity Throw Cover
Area Home Liam Alpaca Throw Blanket
This throw is made from 100% baby alpaca wool. Let me repeat: this throw is made from 100% baby alpaca fur. Unfortunately, “baby alpaca” refers to the animal’s fine, soft hair, not the animal’s age. Anyway, if all that doesn’t convince you that this blanket is sweet, I don’t know what will. Baby alpaca fur is also effective: it is exceptionally warm and close to the fineness of cashmere, but more durable. Whether elegantly draped over a chair or worn around the shoulders like a cape, this throw is the epitome of modern luxury.
- Light, silky and artisanal touch
- Dry clean only
- Keep away from pets

The Big One Oversized Super Soft Plush Throw
“Caticorns”, “Dogs With Bones” and “Hedgehogs” are just a sample of the 38 designs available. Does this cover say, “I’m a mature adult who’s serious about home decorating?” No, but it doesn’t matter when “Dinosaur Space” is an option (although there are solid colors available). Plus, you can buy two covers for $45. Nothing beats a deal.
- Super affordable, especially when purchased as a pair
- Prints may be too loud or childish for adults
